The first movement from Craig Curry’s five-movement Jazz Mass, Kyrie is a dramatic piece primarily utilizes the traditional Latin text (Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison), but also includes a countermelody in English. After a slow and short a cappella opening, the piece kicks into high gear with an up-tempo minor blues form, leaves room for solos, then moves into a swing section using the text of a prayer of confession in English before returning to a recap of the main theme.
To address the improvisational aspects of the piece, Curry suggests those with a jazz background improvise in marked solo sections. However, for those without improvisation expertise, a vocal scat solo and piano solo are fully notated and may be sung or played note for note, ensuring an authentic sounding result. The piano accompaniment and bass part are also fully notated.
Available for download, your purchase includes pdfs of the conductor score, a choral score (Piano/Vocal), instrumental parts (piano, bass, drums, guitar), and permission to make as many copies as needed for your performance.
