READ ME FIRST: A Very Brief Introduction to Music Publishing and Copyright Law

Thanks for taking the time to learn about copyright laws in music publishing. You might think that a composer or arranger owns the rights to their music, including the right to decide how it’s used or shared. But in the world of print music publishing, that’s not always the case.

Every print music publisher (like Hal Leonard and Alfred Music) has a contract with a composer. The composer gives up all rights to the copyright in exchange for a share of the money made from selling the sheet music. This share is usually between 5 and 10%. Here's an excerpt from one of my contracts,

COMPOSER hereby sells, assigns, transfers, and sets over unto PUBLISHER, its successors and assigns, the work, all copyright therein, and the original manuscript now entitled:   [INSERT SONG TITLE HERE]
.... the rights herein transferred by COMPOSER to PUBLISHER shall include the sole and exclusive right:
(a) to print, publish, and sell the WORK, etc. (and skipping down to letter "e" in the contract)...
(e) to reproduce the WORK mechanically, electrically, photographically, or electronically;
(g) to license or assign to others upon such terms as the PUBLISHER may determine in its discretion
I’m sharing this to help you understand that I don’t have any ownership of my music after it’s published by a print music publisher. So, when you reach out with most of the questions below, I won’t be able to grant your request. Most publishers have a permissions/licensing page on their websites where you can request permission for your particular need.

Do you have a digital copy of [Insert Song Title Here] I can purchase?

Unfortunately, I can’t offer digital downloads or PDFs for music published by other companies. So, if it’s not listed as a download or PDF on our site, I’m afraid not. But I link to the publisher’s website for any of my products they offer digitally. You’ll need to buy it there.

I've lost my copy of the parts for [Insert Song Title Here]. Can you send me a pdf of it?

I’m afraid not. You can find more details in the “Read Me First” section above. It might be worth reaching out to the publisher to see if they offer a “Print on Demand” service. That’s become more popular lately.

How/Where do I download my digital order?

After you finish your checkout, you’ll be taken to your receipt/thank-you page. You’ll find the download links on the right side of the page. If you left the page before downloading, check your email for a receipt with the download links. Just a heads up, since our digital products are often big files, it’s best to download them from a desktop or laptop computer. Many tablets have apps that can open zip files (like iZip for the iPad), but it’s usually easier from a desktop computer.

We sang/played your piece, [Insert Song Title Here], at my last position. I want to do it in my new position but I can't find it anywhere, even here! Could I buy or download a copy from you and make copies?

Sorry, but no. You can find more details in the “Read Me First” section above.
